August 15 is not a blanket rule for every lawn in North Carolina. Grass type, weather, lawn condition, and soil test results can all affect the proper schedule. In fact, individual turf calendars from NC State Extension allow nitrogen later in August for certain warm-season grasses and situations.
However, our goal is to stop aggressively pushing growth before cooler, wetter weather increases the risk of large patch. Once we reach the second half of August, we begin shifting from summer growth to fall preparation.
This timing helps us avoid several common problems:

For our fall applications, we prefer 0-0-22 K-Mag, which is also called sul-po-mag. It contains no nitrogen, no phosphate, and 22% potash. It also supplies magnesium and sulfur.
There are other potassium sources, including 0-0-60 muriate of potash and approximately 0-0-50 potassium sulfate. However, we prefer a sulfate-based 0-0-22 product in our program, especially around more sensitive grass types such as Centipede.
What Potassium Does for a Warm-Season Lawn
Potassium is sometimes described as a winter shield for turf, but that explanation can be misleading. Potassium is not lawn antifreeze, and applying more than the lawn needs will not guarantee protection from winter damage.
Instead, potassium supports normal processes inside the plant. It helps the grass regulate water, handle environmental stress, and maintain healthy plant function as conditions change. Therefore, a properly timed application can support a stronger transition into dormancy.
You also should not expect potassium to create the same visible response as nitrogen. A lawn treated with 0-0-22 may not suddenly grow faster or become several shades darker. That is not the goal.
The value of fall lawn fertilizer for warm-season grass is often less visible at first. You are preparing the plant for seasonal stress instead of forcing immediate color. Consequently, the benefits may show up as better resilience through winter and a more dependable recovery during spring.
However, potassium should still be applied based on the condition of the lawn and, ideally, a current soil test. More product does not automatically create better results.
How Much 0-0-22 Fertilizer Should You Apply?
A fertilizer rate should be based on the amount of actual nutrient you want to deliver, not simply the total weight of the bag. This is where many DIY applications go wrong.
For example, one pound of 0-0-22 does not provide one pound of potash. Only 22% of the product is potash. The rest of the product consists of other included nutrients and carrier materials.
To determine the product rate, divide 100 by the third number on the bag:
- Find the third number in the fertilizer analysis.
- Divide 100 by that number.
- Use the result as the pounds of product per 1,000 square feet.
- Multiply that rate by your lawn’s measured square footage.
For 0-0-22, the calculation is 100 divided by 22, which equals approximately 4.55. Therefore, about 4.5 to 5 pounds of product per 1,000 square feet supplies roughly one pound of potash.
If you have a 10,000-square-foot lawn, that equals approximately 45.5 to 50 pounds of product. However, this example does not mean every 10,000-square-foot lawn automatically needs that amount.

The NC State Extension Zoysiagrass maintenance calendar advises against applying nitrogen from September through November. It recommends one pound of potash per 1,000 square feet using an appropriate potassium source.
Because Zoysia recovers slowly from damage, careful timing matters. Overwatering, excessive thatch, and late nitrogen can create additional stress during the transition into fall.
Centipedegrass
Centipedegrass is naturally a low-fertility grass. Trying to force it to become dark green through repeated nitrogen applications can cause more problems than it solves.
