Outdoor Flea and Tick Control In Wilmington, Leland & Hampstead NC

Do you worry about your family members or pets getting fleas and ticks as soon as they step out of the house? Fleas and ticks are a big problem in most areas of the eastern United States and Wilmington is not exempt. It’s important that you take care of your yard to make sure they stay away from your property.

As ticks and fleas can cause both bites and irritations as well as transmit certain diseases, there is a serious cause for concern.

Reclaiming your yard can be done by treating it and staying on top with a good annual service plan. These treatments should drastically reduce the population of fleas and ticks. With a safe environment, you’ll be able to enjoy the outdoors again.

Facts About Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks rely on hosts to survive, but their lifespan differs. The CDC’s research has discovered that most ticks go through four different stages: the egg stage, the six-legged larva stage, the eight-legged nymph stage, and the adult. Ticks need to drink blood at each stage and it may take up to three years for the cycle to complete.

The majority of ticks die because they don’t find a host from which to drink blood. It typically takes about 24 hours for a tick to run out of glucose and die. If the conditions are right (moist conditions), it may hang on a bit longer. Ticks feed on both animals and people and they can be carried into your home with your pets

Contrastingly, the flea has a much shorter life cycle. Unlike the tick, this bug goes from an egg to a larva to a pupa and then an adult in between two weeks and several months, depending on conditions.

Like ticks, fleas need to feed on blood to survive and will be dead in as little as a week without any. They typically live between two and three months. Most fleas prefer animal hosts over human, however, biting human hosts are not unheard of.

Both ticks and fleas prefer wet, shady, cool places that are out of direct sunlight. Got tall grass or shrubbery? Mowing your lawn can help prevent both pests from hanging around in your yard. Maintaining a clean lawn is the key to avoiding pest invasions. Keep the leaves and branches picked up, make sure there’s no trash lying around.
