  6. Add the stone base. Place about 3 inches of washed #57 stone along the bottom.
  7. Install the pipe. Run your perforated pipe toward the outlet with the holes positioned down around the four and eight o’clock positions.
  8. Connect the outlet. Run the drainage line to your planned discharge point, such as a properly located pop-up emitter.
  9. Test the system. Run water through it before you cover anything.
  10. Finish the trench. Add the remaining stone, wrap the fabric over the top, backfill with topsoil, and reinstall the sod.


This is the basic process for how to install a French drain, but do not let the simplicity of the list fool you. The slope and discharge point are just as important as the pipe itself. If the trench has dips or the outlet is too high, water can collect inside the system instead of flowing where you intended.


Why Do French Drain Pipe Holes Face Down?
