Control the presence of chinch bugs in your lawn with our yearly program.
Are you watering your lawn regularly, but it still looks dry? Does it have sections that turn yellow or brown? You could be dealing with a chinch bug infestation. Chinch bug control is vital to a healthy and beautiful lawn in Wilmington, NC.
What are chinch bugs?
Chinch bugs live above ground and eat grass. These small insects use a piercing mouthpart called a stylet to suck the living plant juices from the grasses. The insect pierces the leaves, stems, or crowns of the lawn grasses and sucks up all the juice
Chinch bugs have a three-stage life cycle. The first is the egg, which hatches to become a nymph, and then an adult chinch bug.
Chinch bug eggs are white. They turn orange before they hatch. The eggs are shaped like beans with one pointy end on each side
When the eggs have hatched, the chinch bugs enter their nymph phase. There are 5 instars within this phase and all of them look different. The first nymphal stage starts with an orange body with a cream-colored stripe on its forehead. It goes from orange to purple or grey color in the second and fourth instar. They are slow to grow until the fifth instar, at which point the black coloring begins developing with visible wing pads.
In the adult stage, chinch bugs are about 3.5mm long and 1.75 mm wide. The majority of their body is grey or black and covered in hairs, aside from their wings that are white with a black spot in between, and their legs that are dark orange. As temperatures reach 70 Fahrenheit, adult chinch bugs become active and start to mate. In the springtime, females lay about 200 eggs in the folds of grass or in thatch. Most of them will hatch within a couple of weeks of being laid.
